KUALA LUMPUR: MIC central working committee candidates not endorsed by the party president want an equal opportunity to reach out to delegates.
K.P. Samy claimed he and others not in the president’s team were at a disadvantage.
Samy, a supporter of former party deputy president Datuk S. Subramaniam who is vying for the No 2 post, said delegates should be allowed to hear both sides when a meet-the-delegate session convenes.
“The president’s team have more resources and funds to meet the delegates in large areas whereas we are forced to go door-to-door. Give us an equal opportunity to talk to the delegates,” he said at a press conference attended by several other candidates on Sunday.
Samy also called for a debate between MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu and his estranged one-time deputy Subramaniam before the party election on Sept 12 to clear allegations.
“The debate will give Subramaniam an opportunity to clear his name and avoid any unsavoury words.
“Samy Vellu claims that Subramaniam is not qualified to lead the Indian community. If the debate proves that Subramaniam is not fit to continue the leadership, we ourselves will pull out and will ask Subramaniam to do the same,” he added.
Samy also hit out at Samy Vellu for chastising his one-time blue-eyed boy Datuk S. Sothinathan.
Sothinathan and Subramaniam are in a three-corner fight for the No 2 post against the president’s pick and incumbent Datuk G. Palanivel.
