Festivals

Deepavali

The only national public holiday for Hindus in West Malaysia. It's customary for Malays and Chinese to visit their Hindu friend on this auspicious day.

Pongal

Harvesting festival.  No public Holiday but celebrated moderately

Vesak Day

Public Holiday. Not much significant for Indians except for the fact that Buddhism is closely related to Hinduism.

Newspapers

Tamil daily's are owned by politicians or their loyal supporters aligned to ruling party. Publishing licenses are renewed annually. Though,  most of the time, the newspapers are preoccupied in MIC leadership tussle, they do from time to time show their independence by highlighting Indian's concern.

Thina Murasu

Editor : Veerasamy (Glamour name: Thamilmani)

Highlights
  • Tamil Malar  was  shutdown for for publishing an article that contained a line purportedly offensive to Muslims without  giving the editor an opportunity to apologize or retract the article.

  • Tamil Murasu started by well known figure, the late K. Sarangapani, closed owing to financial difficulties. The paper continues to publish in Singapore.

  • Tamil Osai closed after an intense court battle and of-course with literal fist fights and Office capturing. The biggest joke: two versions hitting the street on the same day.
