Brain surgery

source: medline Plus

Brain surgery is a procedure to treat problems in the brain and the surrounding structures.

Description

Before surgery, the hair on part of the scalp is shaved, and the area is cleaned. The doctor makes a surgical cut through the scalp. The location of this cut depends on where the problem in the brain is located.

The surgeon creates a hole in the skull and removes a piece, called a bone flap.

If possible, the surgeon will make a smaller hole and insert a tube with a light and camera on the end. This is called an endoscope. The surgery will be done with tools placed through the endoscope. MRI or CT can help guide the doctor to the proper place in the brain.

During surgery, your surgeon may:

  • Clip off an aneurysm to prevent blood flow
  • Remove a tumor or a piece of tumor for a biopsy
  • Remove abnormal brain tissue
  • Drain blood or an infection

The bone flap is usually replaced after surgery, using small metal plates, sutures, or wires. The bone flap may not be put back if your surgery involved a tumor or an infection, or if the brain was swollen. (This is called a craniectomy.)

The time it takes for the surgery depends on the problem being treated.

Subramaniam is still in Coma

“Subramaniam’s health is improving day by day”, the same standard news from Makkal Osai Tamil daily since November 11th with no specific details.

Subra’s Life in Gods Hand

Monday, November 28, 2011

Two weeks after undergoing two brain operations, Subramaniam is still in coma.

The former MIC deputy president and one of the well-known faces for the Indian Malaysians for the last four decades has not regained consciousness and not responding to external environment till now.

According to medical websites, this condition is termed Persistent Vegetative State (PVS) and could last for years.

Ariel Sharon, the former Israeli Prime Minister, is in PVS since 2006. That is close to six years costing approximately RM 1.3 million per year to keep him alive.

As a public figure and being called Makkal Thalaivar (people’s leader), Makklal has the right to know Subra’s true health state even if that truth is bitter or painful.

Ronald Regan, ABC Peter Jennings, Apple founder Steve Jobs and many other public figures in the west revealed their medical conditions to the public avoiding speculations and rumors. But, that’s not case with Malaysian public figures.

The Tamil daily Makkal Osai is keep telling its readers that Subra is recuperating and has passed the ‘danger zone’.

Brain Hemorrhage (Bleeding): Causes, Symptoms, Treatments

medicinenet.com

A brain hemorrhage is a type of stroke. It's caused by an artery in the brain bursting and causing localized bleeding in the surrounding tissues. This bleeding kills brain cells.

The Greek root for blood is hemo. Hemorrhage literally means "blood bursting forth. "Brain hemorrhages are also called cerebral hemorrhages, intracranial hemorrhages, or intracerebral hemorrhages. They account for about 13% of strokes. Oscar-winning director of The English Patient Anthony Minghella, President Franklin D. Roosevelt, and actor Richard Burton all died of brain hemorrhages.

What happens during a brain hemorrhage?

When blood from a trauma irritates brain tissues, it causes swelling. This is known as cerebral edema. The pooled blood collects into a mass called a hematoma. These conditions increase pressure on nearby brain tissue, and that reduces vital blood flow and kills brain cells.

Bleeding can occur inside the brain, between the brain and the membranes that cover it, between the layers of the brain's covering or between the skull and the covering of the brain.

What causes bleeding in the brain?

There are several risk factors and causes of brain hemorrhages. The most common include:

How is a brain hemorrhage treated?

Once you see a doctor, he or she can determine which part of the brain is affected based on your symptoms.

Doctors may run a variety of imaging tests, such as a CT scan, which can reveal internal bleeding or blood accumulation, or an MRI. A neurological exam or eye exam, which can show swelling of the optic nerve, may also be performed. Blood tests and a lumbar puncture (spinal tap) may also be needed.

Treatment for bleeding in the brain depends on the location, cause, and extent of the hemorrhage. Surgery may be needed to alleviate swelling and prevent bleeding. Certain medications may also be prescribed. These include painkillers, corticosteroids or diuretics to reduce swelling, and anticonvulsants to control seizures. Blood products or intravenous fluids may be administered if needed.

Can people recover from brain hemorrhages and are there possible complications?

How well a patient responds to a brain hemorrhage depends on the size of the hemorrhage and the amount of swelling.

Some patients recover completely. Possible complications include stroke, loss of brain function, or side effects from medications or treatments. Death is possible, and may quickly occur despite prompt medical treatment.
