KUALA LUMPUR: Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) leader P. Uthayakumar has been served with a warrant of arrest for failing to turn up in a Sessions Court here for his sedition case.
Sessions Court Judge Ahmad Zamzani Mohd Zain served the order against him in the presence of DPP Azlina Rasdi and Lailawati Ali, and Uthayakumar’s bailor.
Azlina said that the judge had asked the bailor why she did not submit the medical certificate (MC) for Uthayakumar between April 2 and May 17.
She said the bailor replied that although the MC was received on April 4, she was only told to submit it yesterday.
During yesterday’s proceedings, Azlina had also applied to subpoena the doctor who issued the MC as the prosecution wanted to clarify the matter with the doctor.
Uthayakumar, 49, who is contesting the Kota Raja parliamentary seat and the Sri Andalas state seat as an Independent, was charged under the Sedition Act in the court on Dec 11, 2007, over a letter posted on the “Police Watch Malaysia” website and addressed to then British Prime Minister Gordon Brown.
Uthayakumar said the warrant was issued despite him having an MC.
“I have an MC from Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia issued by a consultant neurosurgeon for a prolapsed disc and a small tumour on my backbone,” said Uthayakumar at his operations centre in Taman Sentosa.
Mention of the case has been set for May 7. |
